Complete DenturesThe teeth have many responsibilities. They help you to eat and digest properly with biting and chewing. They control airflow, allowing you to communicate effectively through speech. They also play a major role in a gorgeous smile. Tooth loss affects every single function of your teeth, decreasing your oral health, your quality of life, and your confidence. Replacing your missing teeth is essential for getting your life back. Eugene Dental Group can help with several treatment options to replace multiple missing teeth, including a dental bridge, traditional dentures, and implant-supported denture solutions. What Causes Tooth Loss?Tooth loss can occur for a variety of reasons. One of the most common, however, is gum disease. Gum disease occurs when oral bacteria are left to irritate the gum tissue. When this happens, the immune system sends an inflammatory response that causes swelling. The gums pull away from the teeth, allowing bacteria to fall below. They then start attacking the ligaments and the jawbone, weakening them. The teeth eventually become loose and fall out. Other causes of tooth loss include:
What are Dentures?Complete dentures (those designed to replace a full missing arch of teeth) are a common treatment for tooth loss that has been around for hundreds of years. However, the dentures that we use today are nothing like their original counterparts. Today’s complete dentures are designed to look more natural, using different colors for the base to match your natural gum tissue, and different shades for the teeth to appear more like actual teeth. They are also designed to be more comfortable. Complete dentures are a removable prosthesis that consists of a base, made from acrylic, that holds acrylic resin teeth. The base sits directly on your gums, relying on them for support. Properly fitting dentures can be held in place by suction, but denture adhesives can also be purchased for use. When You Have Lost All Teeth in One ArchIf you have lost all of the teeth in one arch, or you have an arch with numerous missing teeth, and the ones that are remaining are unhealthy, a full, or complete denture is used. Before the creation of your denture, we first need to extract the remaining unhealthy teeth. After those teeth have been removed, an impression of your mouth is taken. This impression is then used to custom design and create a denture specific to your mouth. At Eugene Dental Group we also offer implant-support dentures, which are not removable and have better functionality than a traditional denture. To assess which denture treatment is right for you, Dr. Vivona or will conduct a thorough dental exam. What if I Still Have Some Healthy Teeth Left?If you have a section, or two, of several missing teeth in a single arch, but the rest of your remaining teeth are still perfectly healthy, there is no reason to extract those teeth. Those teeth are important for your jaw health. In cases like these, we can provide a partial denture. Much like a full denture, partial dentures are made from impressions of your mouth. Their design is similar as well, with the addition of metal clasps. These clasps hook on to your healthy teeth, helping to provide additional support and stability. Denture BenefitsThere are several benefits that come with dentures, including:
